Is Jesus knocking on the door of your heart?
Revelation 3:20 says, “Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.” Jesus died on the cross for you. No one is good enough to enter heaven without accepting the offered grace through Jesus by placing your faith in him. He knocks on the door of everyone’s heart, but are you letting him enter since he is the light of life?
We have free will. That means that we can choose whether or not we will accept Jesus as our Savior. John 6:44 says, “No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them, and I will raise them up at the last day.” Jesus needs to invite us, but we can decide to ignore him and say we will later ask him into our hearts.
God offers every person the opportunity, but you won’t hear him knock on your door forever.
When I was growing up, I lived in a small rural town in Pennsylvania. Our house was a few blocks from the fire station. On several occasions, the siren jolted me awake. I lived in that house for over fifteen years, but I moved into an apartment right across the street from the fire station when I turned eighteen.
Over Christmas that year, a friend stayed with me. In the middle of the night, the siren sounded, scaring her out of her deep sleep. The following day she asked me how often the deafening siren sounds in the middle of the night. I told her that it hasn’t sounded since I moved into the apartment.
If you don’t answer God’s knock, you will eventually quit hearing the knock.
My friend looked at me like I was crazy. She said that she fell out of bed last night because the siren caused her to jump. I told her that I didn’t hear the siren because I learned to tune it out. I just didn’t hear it anymore.
If you are already a Christian, God still knocks when he wants to get your attention.
It’s the same way with Jesus. He’s still knocking, but over the years, we tune him out. If God is knocking on your heart, there is something he wants to tell you, or there’s something he wants you to deal with. His knocking may take different forms, such as not being able to sleep.
We need to pay attention to all of the ways he can knock. He may use people to get our attention, but he has a good reason any time he tries to get our attention. It is in our best interest to pay attention and answer his knocks.
God wants to use us to serve his purpose. We are here to fulfill his plans and use the gifts and talents he has given us to serve him. We only have a limited number of days on this earth.
When was the last time God spoke to you?
God speaks to me all the time, but I don’t always hear him. The last time I heard God’s thunderous voice was when I had to give my victims impact statement at the hearing for my son’s murder. God told me exactly what to say to my son’s killer about forgiving him. I received so much peace because I listened and said what he told me to say.
Will you choose to follow God and listen to his voice? Or will you ignore the one who was willing to die on a cross so that you can spend all eternity with Him in heaven?
When was the last time God spoke to you?
This is such an amazing post! Thank you for making me think and reminding me to keep an open door to Jesus. I love the way you compared the different ways we can either be open or closed off to him. God bless!
Wonderful reminder to be listening for His voice. He usually speaks to me through His Word.
Love this! That’s where we have to willing to slow down and listen since not all contact is going to be obvious. There have been times where I feel like there’s a push and I ignore it. There has been moments that I have ignored that feeling and “get hit by a 2×4” (that’s how my family and I refer to it).
Great analogy.
I am still striving to hear God’s call 24/7. I hear it often, but not often enough. Thanks for reminding me that God is still calling me home!
Beautiful blog! Very important. Thank you so much for sharing!
Such a great analogy you used with the sirens and how we can become so accustom to something we don’t even hear it anymore! Thank you for sharing your wisdom, experience and encouragement in this area!
Great post! There is a saying, “In silence you hear God’s voice”. We are so caught up in this busy life but those silent moments are such treasured moments for me.
Great analogy not hearing the deafening sound of the sirens anymore to not hearing God’s knock on the door of our hearts. I can relate to that because I have this old family clock that chimes every half hour. And even when I sit within close proximity I don’t hear the 10 or 12 chimes anymore. We get so used to tuning it out.
This reminds me of a painting by William Holman Hunt entitled The Light of the World where Jesus stands at the door knocking but the door doesn’t have a door handle because it must be opened from the inside = We must let Christ into our heart.
Sometimes I get discouraged because so many people around me have tuned out Christ in their life. But I know that God is still knocking, and we have seen people accept Him who we thought would never come to Him. It shows, nothing is impossible with God!
