I challenge you to find 1 description of Jesus in the Bible.
“I, John, your brother and companion in the suffering and kingdom and patient endurance that are ours in Jesus, was on the island of Patmos because of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus. On the Lord’s Day I was in the Spirit, and I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet, which said: ‘Write on a scroll what you see and send it to the seven churches: to Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia and Laodicea.’
“I turned around to see the voice that was speaking to me. And when I turned I saw seven golden lampstands, and among the lampstands was someone like a son of man, dressed in a robe reaching down to his feet and with a golden sash around his chest. The hair on his head was white like wool, as white as snow, and his eyes were like blazing fire. His feet were like bronze glowing in a furnace, and his voice was like the sound of rushing waters. In his right hand he held seven stars, and coming out of his mouth was a sharp, double-edged sword. His face was like the sun shining in all its brilliance.
“When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. Then he placed his right hand on me and said: ‘Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last. I am the Living One; I was dead, and now look, I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades.
“Write, therefore, what you have seen, what is now and what will take place later. The mystery of the seven stars that you saw in my right hand and of the seven golden lampstands is this: The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches, and the seven lampstands are the seven churches.’”
I challenged you to find 1 description of Jesus in the Bible? Have you figured out where these verses are in the Bible?
These verses are found in Revelation 1:9–20. Revelation was written by the apostle John; he is the only original apostle who was not killed for his faith. The book is about the present and the future and is a great way to get to know God. Jesus revealed this revelation so John could share it with us.
Let’s break these verses down.
Verses 9–11
“I, John, your brother and companion in the suffering and kingdom and patient endurance that are ours in Jesus, was on the island of Patmos because of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus. On the Lord’s Day I was in the Spirit, and I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet, which said: ‘Write on a scroll what you see and send it to the seven churches: to Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia and Laodicea.’”
John was on the island of Patmos because he refused to quit preaching the gospel. Patmos was a small rocky island near Ephesus. It is in the Aegean Sea and is part of Asia Minor. The last time John saw Jesus was 60 years earlier when He ascended into heaven.
Verses 12–13
“I turned around to see the voice that was speaking to me. And when I turned I saw seven golden lampstands, and among the lampstands was someone like a son of man, dressed in a robe reaching down to his feet and with a golden sash around his chest.”
In the middle of them was Jesus, who is the protector of the church. His robe reaches His feet, meaning He is the Priest, who intercedes for us so that those of us who have placed our faith in Him as our Savior will have all of our sins forgiven. A golden sash around His chest represents a priest’s strength and authority.
Verse 14
“The hair on his head was white like wool, as white as snow, and his eyes were like blazing fire.”
Jesus’ white head signified his authority, nobility, and righteousness. God and the Son of God, Jesus, are one and the same. White hair shows that He has great wisdom. Flaming eyes represent omniscience, meaning that there is nothing that He does not know.
Verse 15
“His feet were like bronze glowing in a furnace, and his voice was like the sound of rushing waters.”
His glowing bronze feet mean He is also our Judge. The voice of rushing waters was thunderous. The voice is probably overwhelming because it would sound from all directions.
Verse 16
“In his right hand he held seven stars, and coming out of his mouth was a sharp, double-edged sword. His face was like the sun shining in all its brilliance.”
The seven stars are the preachers of the churches. He is holding them in His hand signifies that He has complete control over them and the message of salvation they are to share with the world. His sword mouth was the power of His judgment for those that do not accept the salvation the preachers share. Sun shining in all its brilliance indicate how powerful He is.
Verse 17
“When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. Then he placed his right hand on me and said: ‘Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last.”
His brilliant, glorious face was so powerful that John fell at His feet as a dead man because he could not look at His face. Jesus showed John His heavenly appearance like no one has ever seen. Those who have not accepted Jesus as their Savior will see Him this way at the end of time because He is the Judge. God created the whole world, and He is the beginning, and when everything comes to an end, the only thing left will be Jesus.
Verse 18
“I am the Living One; I was dead, and now look, I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades.”
Jesus is our only way into heaven. He came to earth and died on a cross. Jesus rose back to life on the third day, suffering to offer salvation to everyone through grace. It is a free gift through faith; won’t you choose to accept this gift so you can start a relationship with Him today?
Verses 19–20
“Write, therefore, what you have seen, what is now and what will take place later. The mystery of the seven stars that you saw in my right hand and of the seven golden lampstands is this: The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches, and the seven lampstands are the seven churches.’”
The seven stars are the angels, also meaning pastors, of the churches, and the seven lampstands are the churches. These lampstands signified the light that the churches shed on our dark world. Those of us who have accepted Jesus as our Savior will get our reward when we go to heaven, an eternity spent with Him forever.
Won’t you accept Him as your Lord and Savior by praying:
Dear Jesus, I believe in you. I believe you are the Son of God, that you died for my sins, and that you were buried and rose again as written in the Bible. Come into my heart so I can have eternal life. Fill me with the Holy Spirit and help me to live the way you want me to live. Forgive me for my past sins and guide me in my future so that I can live my life for You. Amen.
The Book of Revelation is such an eye opener. It reveals what is going on right in front of our eyes in today’s world.
We are studying the Book of Revelation using our study guide “Digging Deep into The Revelation of Jesus Christ”.
There is so much to digest and learn. So many prophecies have been fulfilled and we believe the next one is going to be the “Rapture”. Personally, I believe that Jesus is coming soon. The “world” is turning so very much against Christ it’s heart breaking.
And to answer your question, Yes, we are born-again Christians who’s Lord and Saviour is the Lord Jesus Christ.
The book of Revelation is probably the most complicated book in the Bible. I’m so glad you are Christians and diving into a study of the book of Revelation, and I agree with your thoughts.
I completed a reading plan where I read the Bible in a year in chronological order. It was enlightening. And I read daily devotions so was nice to read this breakdown of the verses on the description of Jesus in the Bible.
I love my reading plan too. It breaks down parts of the new and old Testaments daily, along with a psalm and proverb. In addition, I listen to several inspirational daily devotionals each morning.
Thank you for these inspiring thoughts about the description of Jesus in the bible.
Beautiful prayer! This is a great challenge.
I have always been so glad and respected other religions and Christians even when our beliefs may slightly vary, just due to the fact that we all look to Christ who is our Savior and redeemer. With avid nothing is impossible and it is only through Him that we can ever truly find peace and forgiveness. I like this scripture and thought I’d share it… “And he cometh into the world that he may save all men if they will hearken unto his voice; for behold, he suffereth the pains of all men, yea, the pains of every living creature, both men, women, and children, who belong to the family of Adam.” — 2 Nephi 9:21
This is a great breakdown of such a complicated and profound book. I think digging deeper into the book of revelations brings insight into so many different areas of our lives now.
I love thinking of Jesus as the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end…and everything in between.
What a great challenge. This really makes you think.
